Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio
- Delvon Lamarr – hammond organ
Jimmy James – guitar
Dan Weiss – drums
Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio—or as it is sometimes referred to, DLO3—specialize in the lost art of “feel good music.” The ingredients of this intoxicating cocktail include a big helping of the 1960s organ jazz stylings of Jimmy Smith and Baby Face Willette; a pinch of the snappy soul strut of Booker T. & The M.G.’s, The Meters, and sprinkles Motown, Stax Records, blues, and cosmic Jimi Hendrix-style guitar. It’s a soul-jazz concoction that goes straight to your heart and head makes your body break out in a sweat.
The band features organist Delvon Lamarr, a self-taught virtuosic musician, with perfect pitch who taught himself jazz and has effortlessly been able to play a multitude of instruments. On guitar is the dynamo Jimmy James who eases through Steve Cropper-style chanking guitar, volcanic acid-rock freak-out lead playing, and slinky Grant Green style jazz. From Reno, Nevada is drummer Dan Weiss (also of the powerhouse soul and funk collective The Sextones). Dan’s smoldering pocket-groove drumming locks in the trio’s explosive chemistry.

Theo Croker “BLK2LIFE”
American born trumpeter/composer Theo Croker, is hailed as one the great promises of Black American Music (BAM). With “Star People Nation” (his last LP, released in 2019) he’s been nominated to the Grammy Awards. With “Blk2life / A Future Past” released in September 2021 on Sony Masterworks, isn’t a sonic departure of his critically acclaimed release “Escape Velocity”, but a continuation towards a much grander musical legacy that is pushing within the realms of futuristic melody, rhythm, and vibratory enlightenment. The album is a cosmic and futuristic trip that pushes the boundaries of jazz while expanding its melodic and rhythmic perspectives. This album features also great collaborators as well as contributors, Ari Lennox, Charlotte Dos Santos, Gary Bartz, Iman Omari, Kassa Overall, Malaya and the legendary founder of The Fugees, Wyclef Jean, joined Theo Croker on this new project.
As the grandson of the late trumpeter Doc Cheatham, and former student of legendary jazz trumpeter Donald Byrd, trumpeter Theo Croker is an artist steeped in jazz tradition. Well-versed in the swing, bop, and modal styles of acoustic jazz, Croker’s own music reveals a love of organic funk, soul, and gooey, groove-oriented hip-hop. It’s a vital amalgam that would have pleased the forward-thinking Byrd, whose own ’70s funk-jazz albums are an obvious touchstone for Croker.

Makaya McCraven
Makaya McCraven is a beat scientist. The bleeding edge drummer, producer, and sonic collagist is one of Chicago’s savviest cultural players and a multi-talented force whose inventive process & intuitive, cinematic style defy categorization. Called “a sound visionary” (jazzinchicago.org) who is “not your everyday jazz drummer” (thewordisbond.com), McCraven brilliantly moves between genres and pushes the boundaries of jazz and rhythm to create forms of his own.
His breakthrough album In the Moment was released with International Anthem Recording Co. (IARC) in January of 2015 and quickly named “Album of the Week” on BBC 6 Radio by influential DJ Gilles Peterson. In The Moment was a dramatic statement by McCraven, where he debuted a unique brand of “organic beat music” that quickly launched him into the vanguard of not only Internationally-known jazz artists, but also a niche genre of next-wave composer-producers blurring the boundaries of jazz & electronic music.
Makaya continues the development of his “organic beat music” as well as the work of (what Schube described as) “transcending locale” on his 2018 release Universal Beings – a 2xLP album that was recorded at 4 sessions in New York, Chicago, London & Los Angeles. A documentary about Makaya and the making of this album is available on YouTube: https://tinyurl.com/universalbeings
Makaya’s latest work – Deciphering the Message – is a collection of 13 pieces from Blue Note Records extensive catalogue, rearranged and remixed with the new sound. The album was released in October 2021 on Blue Note Records.
