    BRIAN MARSELLA

Brian Marsella is a pianist, composer, bandleader and educator living in New Jersey. A Philadelphia native, Marsella moved to New York in 1998 and has been touring and recording consistently since. Currently Marsella has released 19 albums as a leader or co- leader. His projects include the large ensembles iMAGiNARiUM and Gatos do Sul, the jazz quintet The Flail, the psychedelic surf-rock trio The Modulators, and Archipelago X. Over the past 7 years, Brian has become a central figure in John Zorn’s world as a musician in both his Masada and Bagatelle projects as well as a member of Zorn’s Cobra,New Electric Masada, powerhouse quartet Chaos Magick (John Medeski, Matt Hollenberg, and Kenny Grohowski), new piano trio with Ches Smith and Jorge Roeder and the jazz quartet Incerto (Smith, Roeder and Julian Lage).

Brian graduated in 2000 with a BFA from The New School. A passionate teacher, Brian has come full circle and now is on the faculty of the College of Performing Arts at The New School. In addition to being on the piano faculty of the jazz and contemporary music program, Brian teaches the Cross Genre Improvisation Workshop, John Zorn’s Cobra and John Zorn’s Masada. Brian also is on the jazz piano faculty of the Interlochen Arts Academy

Brian has performed with John Zorn, Cyro Baptista, Matisyahu, Marshall Allen, Nels Cline, Hassan Hakmoun, Jon Irabagon, Ikue Mori, Meg Okura’s Pan Asian Chamber Jazz Ensemble, Chris Lightcap’s SuperBigmouth and Superette, Jessica Lurie Ensemble, Zion80, Edom, Pharaoh’s Daughter, Yemen Blues and Fresh Cut Orchestra in venues and festivals around the world including the Village Vanguard, Jazz at Lincoln Center, The Kimmel Center, Elbphilharmonie (Hamburg), Salle Pleyel (Paris), Newport Jazz Festival, Montreal Jazz Festival, North Sea Jazz Festival, Melbourne Jazz Festival and Big Ears Festival (Knoxville, TN).

    JORGE ROEDER

Originally from Lima, Peru, bassist Jorge Roeder has become renowned as one of the most versatile and expressive bass players in jazz today. Combining a symphonic imagination with the intimate lyricism of a folk musician, the aggressive energy of a raw rocker with the buoyant rhythmic sensibilities of his Afro-Peruvian roots, Roeder conveys a wide spectrum of influences within a resolute foundation. In his hands, says the Ottawa Citizen, “the music feels like it’s dancing from the ground up.”

Roeder has enjoyed long-standing partnerships with Julian Lage, Sofia Rei, Shai Maestro and Ryan Keberle, and shared stages with such innovators as Gary Burton, Nels Cline, Kenny Werner and John Zorn. He’s been recognized with a number of awards, including the 2007 International Society of Bassists Jazz Competition and semi-finalist status in the 2009 Thelonious Monk Bass Competition, as well as a Grammy nomination for the Julian Lage Group’s debut album.

    CHES SMITH

Originally from Sacramento, California, Ches Smith is a drummer, percussionist, and composer based in New York. He has collaborated with a host of artists on many scenes since the early 2000s, including Marc Ribot, Tim Berne, John Zorn, Darius Jones, David Torn, John Tchicai, Nels Cline, Mary Halvorson, Trevor Dunn, Terry Riley, Kris Davis, Dave Holland, Secret Chiefs 3, Xiu Xiu, Good for Cows, Theory of Ruin, and Mr. Bungle, among others.

He has nine records to his name as a bandleader that feature his writing and ensemble curation, and is a devout student of Haitian Vodou drums, performing in religious and folkloric contexts in New York and Haiti for the last decade.

    • John Zorn - alto sax
    • Julian Lage - guitar
    • Jorge Roeder - bass
    • Kenny Wollesen - drums

John Zorn’s newest and most exciting ensemble, The New Masada Quartet is a tight unit of like-minded virtuosi and one of the best groups Zorn has ever had. Bristling hot guitar master Julian Lage, bass wizard Jorge Roeder and 30-year Zorn veteran Kenny Wollesen perform with a crackling live energy that brings the Masada music to life like never before! Led by Zorn’s versatile sax and stop and start conducting, the music is filled with burning solos, telepathic group interaction, heartfelt lyricism and hypnotic grooves.
